The Wānaka "niggle" problem!
The Gym is the Lab. The Outdoors is the Playground. 🏔️🔬
If you’re only doing one, you’re missing out.
When I was personal training in Wellington, I noticed a recurring theme: people were living their lives in a series of boxes.
They would go from the house, to the car, to the gym, to the office, and back again. There was almost zero exposure to natural light or the elements. The weekends would be the only time where outdoor movement could potentially be pursued, but being Wellington, the weather wasn’t always overly inspiring, unless you were a wind surfer!
I was training one lady 5x per week. She would leave her house, see me at the gym, go to work, and then go straight back home again. I noticed that her energy levels, even with the increase in exercise, weren’t really changing. She would always be feeling lethargic and lacking the vitality to really get after it.
I decided to change the script: we trained in the gym twice a week and moved three of the sessions outdoors—jogs, bodyweight movements, and hiking uphill. Within two weeks, her energy skyrocketed and she doubled her lifts in the gym. The effect of merely being outside, getting more sunlight and fresh air was such a game changer for her, because like many people living in cities, she wasn’t often outside! It was all just existing inside different boxes!
The Wānaka Imbalance
Now that I’m in Wānaka, I’m seeing the exact opposite problem. Here, we have a culture of go-getters! People wake up before the sunrise for a hike up Mt Iron, followed by a bike ride out in Glendhu Bay and finishing with a 5km swim in the lake.
But there is a silent issue: the "niggle" culture.
Because everyone is prioritising kilometres over foundation, I have noticed many people carrying injuries and ‘niggles’ of some kind. Many repetitive strain injuries, fall injuries, simply going too hard, too far, too fast injuries. There is an imbalance here, a gap. People are moving, but they aren't building a resilient foundation.
The Hybrid Solution
I believe being outdoors should always be the priority. However, for a community like Wānaka, the missing element is structured strength training.
To continue doing what you love outside long-term, time in a controlled environment such as a gym to address imbalances and weaknesses is crucial. It doesn’t take much—two or three focused load-bearing workouts per week with proper periodisation, paired with some mobility work, is enough to build a far more resilient and capable body.
The gym is our laboratory; the outdoors is our playground.
Use the lab to build your strength, bulletproof your joints, and address imbalances, to improve your performance in the outdoors and thrive, long-term!
